I have painted over the life of the past My father's pencil figures that calculated cuts for paneling up the stairs Which I removed The hole in the wall made by his fist pounding in an effort to wake up my brothers for Sunday Mass Which I repaired The inside of a door where we measured our growth year by year our names penned in my mother's loopy script Which were never painted over I long ago removed heavy shades and curtains from the windows to shine light on corners where sorrow lingers but there are still things I don't understand That is not my purpose here My purpose is to remember then put those memories where they belong- in the past The echoes have been absorbed by plaster walls and wood floors The quiet here mocks our noisy history I clean and paint, replace and repair to soothe the wounds of the past The wounds my siblings avoid by avoiding me The same wounds I wanted to escape But I stay and work for no one else wants the task The sun through the windows takes on a golden hue on clean cream walls The corners reflect light The light that is for me and mine today

Yep, definitely a good poem, publishable, strong - loved the last 5 lines..
"The corners reflect light
the light that is for me and mine
today"
My sentiments exactly, The past can never be as important as here and now. excellent. Pierre.
Even if we want to, we cannot forget our past, though we must put it into proper perspective in the world we live in today. We are who we are in spite of our past and not necessarily because of it. Very nice write, Linda!
Take care,
Sherry
We should never forget our past, but we shouldn't dwell on it either... a past filled with pain, can it be forgotten? I wish I knew how... but until then I'll live with regrets and the memories... and somehow continue on the journey...
excellent write, one which I felt I was reading my own story...
very moving...

Sometimes we gotta grab that bull and confront it Then move on.
I clean and paint, replace and repair
to soothe the wounds of the past
The wounds my siblings avoid
by avoiding me
The same wounds I wanted to escape
But I stay and work
for no one else wants the task
Such pain in these words. That tape must keep going around..
Press the eject..
Excellent write here. Very painful in a relaxing sort of way if you know what I mean. There is always a place for the past even if we cover it with the present. One CAN have the best of both worlds.
You've shivered my soul with this piece, Linda. It depicts, and images, and infers so much, yet, it absorbs, reapplies and understands so much, also, it hurts, abyssmally...
A true poetic piece of astounding depth, of lived life and the search for forgiving another's life in relation to one's own, in the authors perspective. In its releasing manner.
