Always Behind

Our lives unknown and uncharted
souls flung outward into space
So much cosmic dust to contemplate
I think of love and beauty
that dazzling beauty, undone
What do we make of ash that remains?
We tread in dust and leave our footprints
behind us
Always behind when reaching forward
Always behind when looking back
I am footloose now and desire
some solid ground beneath me
for changes are coming on fast
The press breaks the skin of the grape
and the juices run staining the fabric
no matter how we pre-treat or soak
How I wish I could hold
the bright white softness of old cotton
tenderness against the heat of the world
Tenderness so rare save from
my granddaughter's cool fingers
or a breeze blown from coastal water
I long for the womb when life comes
undone
but it spit us out into the brillant light blind
then continually burns our eyes half open
while we cling to some pretense of control
always behind when reaching forward
always behind when looking back

Very good, though the tiny print was a bit hard on these dyslexic eyes...

I love the imagery in this Linda...I guess it means we're pretty much an unbalanced lot, or perhaps lost, would be more appropriate. Still a superb piece.

Mmmm... particularly - as you will know! - love the allusions to the cotton - so pure, so resiliant and a natural protection that weathers and survives so well, yet is always so newly fresh and crisp when laundered.... great allegory here, as always. Some wonderful lines and images, Linda.

And I haven't forgotten about the Eagles report... but, in brief... it was GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!! :))) LOL Kate xx

We are lost when we come into this world and then found by those around us. Later when we are lost all we desire is to be found and when found our rescue only breeds contentment for a short time. Until the realization of true life sets in....... "Tenderness so rare save from my Granddaughter's cool fingers" Such an excellent line and poem. I can really relate. Pierre.

the more we leave behind.
