The Evil That Tries To Keep Us Down
by Barbara Lynn Terry
It came knocking at my soul
telling me not to be whole
because I cannot be complete
that is the girl in my soul.
It screamed so very loud
and I thought it was the cloud
in my mind that has left me blind
to the very needs I must have.
It finally knocked me over
like a gigantic bulldozer
burying me up to my neck
and it just said what the heck.
It walked away while I helpless
Laughing in all its evil.
I couldn't abide this lonely fear
anymore, so I let out a tear.
The earth moved and I was free
free again to be me
I had beaten the evil strife
that would have ended my life.
I have felt that evil in me and fought and conquered
No one can keep a free spirit on a cage!
Brilliant write!

I think I can identify with your poem because in my younger days I had never heard of "programming the mind", which meant I had to feed it with positive thought. (Every time the devil came in, I slapped him down with a positve quote.) My mind needed direction from me, and I eventually learned that a mind untended is the devil's playground.
Thus, I started reading things about positive faith. Norman Vincent Peale's wonderful writings were my salvation. They taught me to feed my thoughts with the things I wanted to happen, to look for solutions to problems, rather than drowning in the problem itself, and to try and look at the positive side of things.
You can tell your poem had an impact on me, since it brought out so many feelings and memories.
