The Poem reminds me of Uncle Joe's farm in Vermont!
The farmhouse was dilapidated, old.
White paint was peeling.
Frosted windows, kept out the
cold everyone was feeling.
Wintery blasts of Artic air were whipping through the valley.
A small mouse scurried along,
not taking time to tally.
Seeking refuge from winter's thrust,
she ran into the old red barn.
She burrowed into mounds of hay, that had been stored for winter days.
The barn had an Oder all its own, known to the creatures within.
Soft light shown through icey windowpanes, brightening the noisy din.
The farmer started milking the cows , fed the horses too.
Then tended to the hungry sows, as the contented mouse slept the whole day through!

A whimsy fairytale about a contented mouse. Like the way it flowed and rhymed.
I grew up in the dairy state of Wisconsin. Spent some time on my grand parents' farm and on my uncle's farm. In the winter, the barn was always very warm because the cows gave off a lot of body heat in their stanchions and were only let out in the farmyard on warm sunny days.
The haymow above the barn benefited from the heat below, but there were a lot of gaps, where cold winter winds could reach an. Still, barns were full of sparrows, mice and sometimes, pigeons and even owls. But cats roamed these barns making it very dangerous for mice. They always showed up during milking time to lap up any spilled milk or better, get a plateful poured for them by the grateful farmer for keeping the mice population down.
