A small dog, feisty and independent, faithful, long-lived, but finally unable to hold on longer. A celebration of him on a glorious day. An unexpected reminder of all he meant.
Recalling
A faithful friend,
Weakened toward the end,
Left us on a September morning.
We celebrated his spirit with balloons
Red and blue and yellow.
They caught the wind over Alki Beach
And when we finally lost them
In the brilliant sky
They seem to reach the Cascades.
Today I passed a Calder print
As I do every morning.
It tipped, an opening to the sky,
Its whimsical circles balloons,
Rising, red and blue and yellow.
Beyond them I could see
A grumpy little dog,
Tail wagging, waiting to be fed.
I never know
What gives unity to rememberance.
It's there to surprise me,
If I listen, look.
To be recalled in this way would be an honor, as this is well-written. I particularly liked the Calder as it really goes along with the feel of this poem. Your rememberance is one of light and air and freedom, not weight and sadness, and that's always a beautiful thing, kind of in a Christina Rossetti sort of way.
Ah, what a glorious way to commerate the passing of a friend, and what a wonderful way he had of reminding you of his existance. This is truly beautiful and I can identify and mourn your loss.
