Wait a Sec!
They started to arrive
in the middle of the month:
Emails from afar,
and the occasional call.
Anticipating an event,
underlining its meaning.
The sentiments were lovely,
sincere and welcome.
I knew the day was coming,
but knew it
Not so clearly as
clearly others did:
A decade to celebrate,
the messages reminded,
And not just a decade,
a big one, to boot.
My reactions stared back
at me
From a figurative mirror
I could no longer ignore.
Our base-ten system had drawn
a frame around me.
But why at that particular point,
since other measures
Are counted in sixties
and twenty-fours
And the even-odder,
three sixty-five?
Aha! I can choose among them,
and so I do.
The tiny second best resembles
its mates,
The ones from yesterday,
the ones born tomorrow.
In its brief life
I can experience
Kindness, caring and so many
forms of beauty,
Hear music and the voices
of those I love.
Time goes on, to be sure,
but life even more.
So enough time to contemplate,
and write!
Let’s live this marvelous second
together!
