let her cry,
the keys, a
dozen spare
cut,

the rough top edge
of the sketch paper
where it had been
torn,

let her cry,
artistic trademark
waste-basket
shredded,

evidence of
f***ing, a bundle
of bedsheets
slashed,

let her cry,
flick open the
napkin on her lap,
crotch dry, sex
slit,

the peal of bells,
barrels of beer,
the church looked
lovely, fresh carnations
cut,

her bridesmaids in
lavender, the dovecote
turned into a maypole,
fluttering yards of  peach
lace ribbon curled with
scissors,

let her cry,
watching the brides
drive away,
let her cry,
when the deep purple
falls over the garden wall
to her own bed,
let her cry,

winds her hair in a pin curl
from 1939, the Bing Crosby
record very old, well-played
Deep Purple grinding and
scratching beneath the worn
needle,

let her cry,
Bing sings, "In the still of
the night, once again I
hold you tight,"
let her cry...

Raw and straight to the point...

Sage, I loved this poem. Authentic. Raw. So personal, and yet, so universal. It almost didn't matter to me --the reasons for the tears-- but that you so eloquently conveyed how easily they come when the mind and heart are deep.

In the tears of LET HER CRY this reader perceives as much an intense dissection of rote cultural tradition as an individual metaphorical (maybe) sobbing heart. Great poem.

Blimey, this is painful and so well done, Sage. Rattles a few personal bars for me for reasons that I can't quite fathom... childhood memories, perhaps. Very Miss Haversham. Very many Widowed, Betrayed and Denied brides of each successive era, too. You speak volumes with few deft well-delivered paper-knife cuts here and for some strange reason also makes me think of the tragedy of Sylvia Plath... but maybe it's just my thoughts of the poem she wrote about cutting off the top of her thumb. Well sketched so that both characters and scenario live and breathe. A cinema in words. TY K xx
