Legerdemain

sleight of hand
rejected and feared,
coinages and kennings,
"givers of rings" -

what must we
know of the symbol
of love, eros things?
finger metals fitted
in vows,

for true love is
never exchanged
for a dupe, my braided
gold spurs deadlier than
a timber rattler, the rowels
scintillating against the flint,
thunder and lightning striking
those who question my method,
my dowry sure as hell isn't
in cows,

let the udders spring
forth, two maidens accept
my engagement copper wheat
penny to lie in their cleavage,
the loafers weren't invented
for another century, they pack
the silo with whipping sheaves
and head for the whale's way,
when they get to the sea, they
drag fish out of the surf to
honor me,

someone somewhere
is at the loom spinning
cloth under vine and
bamboo watching the
sandlot games, violent
and bloody, but then
aren't all games? I am
at the blackjack tables
watching the sleight of
hand, an Ace levitates as
to say to me, "this is your
real card of fate," and then
the whiskey and the sagebrush
Truth in the Eight, what could it
all possibly have to do with the
color of money? Was it too high
of a price to pay? The green felt
isn't stingy today, let the chips
fall where they may, trickery
hoists up its silver-studded
belt,

I heard a girl
playing songs
on her guitar
with a seminarian's
zeal, Arabian, a hint
of Western philosophy,
her bindi dot aligned on
her forehead, took it off
for me and placed it under
shells, sleight of hand, "which
one?" she pointed. I chose
number three, she turned it
up and magically, a heishi,
that wonderful multicolored
crazy patterned bead from
the seventies, I ran it through
my leather thong, tied it around
my neck, took a hit off her water
pipe, legerdemain - sleight of hand.

Vividly imaged, Sage, you take us and make us See. No trickery here, just pure poetry! Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

The reach you have throughout years, long before either of us ever saw, becomes reality. It always astounds me and the colors, they are very important, always paint your pages.
You're of the best Sage.
Blessings!

Sage,
Each verse is vintage in itself, the images run and rush at me in waves, tantalizing, drowning, washing clean in the best possible fashion...and trickery abounds. Oh yes!

Speechless, Sage. This is STUNNING... so intense and a wonderful follow-on from It Took You. You wind us ever tighter with your tourniquet of words and we bleed or gasp within them. Such analogies are to die for, and come at us faster than rapid machine gun fire. The breadth and depth is staggering with visuals that leap off the page, technicolour, living and 3D. Each verse has stand-alone quality and is worth its weight in heishi, but the card-table verse particularly does it for me, with trickery hoisting up its silver-studded belt. This takes me back not only to Roswell, but Telluride as well... the mining, the wealth the hip-ness of it all. Looks like old BC wouldn't have been the only one to have had a run of all the women if Miss Sage happened to be in town! :)) xx

Taking the meaning one step further and then kicking it in the ass to give it a deeper meaning. My friend, when you get hold of a subject and give it the Sagetreatment all other descriptions fall by the wayside, dictionaries are put to shame, black and white, run of the mill attempts at informing the public are left eating silo dust as the Sagetreatment gives we minions examples of the untold (until now) of the richness behind words . . .

love's master sometimes are those of trickery
feeding us the spades of his lies...but
then those who mastered the master while he had not a single clue
oh yes there are no greater lovers than those who know how to play their jokers wild hiding yet behind another mask...or maybe only seems....they can't see; that we can see thier colors...
oh... and the scent of that scarf
we women know how to weave
