Valley Tan: Mother Lode of the Mormons they call it Valley Tan, Mormon whiskey, Utah born and brewed, kind of a whiskey, first cousin to whiskey, Mark Twain said, exclusive Mormon refresher made of imported fire and brimstone, Mother Lode of the Mormons, Saints and Sinners, Gentile incursion into Zion, purported to Brigham's Young's favorite remedy, a patent medicine, Henry Wagener Brewery in Emigration Canyon, The Beer Bible Logan to Nephi authoritative tome occupying every canyon mouth, stream and natural spring, early to mid 1860s, drinking and gambling establishment, Salt Lake House operated by Mormon apostle Heber C. Kimball, Valley Tan, a Mormon invention in frontier Utah, the notorious Mormon enforcer Orren Porter Rockwell's roadhouse no relative of Norman Rockwell, but surely an artist brewing beer from beets and labeling the liquor Valley Tan is classified religiously "Americana" along with George Thorogood. Good Brews have always been associated with the Good Lord and his Good People... think His Holy Spirit probably outstrips the lot of it, though, and certainly doesn't leave a sour aftertaste or hangover! Americana speaks to me of a certain feel-good... and of the bad-boy, Bad-To-The-Bone attractiveness of clean dirt: next to Salt Lake House was the equally Mormon-based clean-up operation of Salt Lake Hospital, right?! Like Rockwell's sharply imaged and clean-lined illustrations, the subtle blend of bittersweet lends itself to the homely domestic flavour that is good ol' America :)) xx
