Suspicious Minds

headlights flashing
behind me, truck passed
me on fire, her gas tank on
empty, needle buried in her
booking agent zone,

I dialed her
number on the
cell phone, her voice
soft with thanks, bar neon
flashed Suspicious Minds,
she booked the band closing
jealous wives out behind the blinds,
homeless man at the trash bin digging
out watermelon rinds, my mind caught in
the track, escorting her every night always
staying in my car not walking into the bar,
waving her off on my way to the dirt backroads,

home again,
quiet, fragrant
cedar and sandalwood,
cold beer, shot of whiskey,
she'd be phoning at ten, suspicious
minds I called a cab, pulled another tab,
the girl in the band I wondered,

free will and trust,
kiss, no tell and lust,
my key ring with her spare
truck key turned the ignition,
gas gauge on full, cab waited
while I wrote her a note, left it on
her seat, "suspicious minds are part
of backcountry roads" -

cab driver turned
on the backcountry
dirt road the way we
came, said he delivered
five gallons of gas to the
owner of the truck I was just
in, my cell rang, it was ten, she
said she'd be home at two fifteen,
I asked the driver to take me back to
get the note, "suspicious minds are part
of backcountry roads."

Well penned Sage and holds the interest from beginning to end. I've spent my life on the country backroads.

As always, you manage to code your poetry where the truth lies beneath the surface. Your unique understanding of human nature and your own simple, personal desire override the obvious and give those who delve deeper a sense of your outrageous and lovable inner self . . Don't ever stop . . .

Well I have not only lived on those back country roads but have driven them too with suspicious minds of a partner wandering. I am happy that this couple at least had a happy ending. Thank you for sharing.

May the Lord Bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and walk by your side. With love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your den sister Barbie

I think that love does require or perhaps entice jealousy which is the roots of suspicious minds, good work Sage.

reassurance is great for
Suspicious Minds" even if one has to take the initiative to get it
and here is a good example of "this isn't what it looks like"
but usually it is case-n-point....gotta love that cabbie
I know a scenic gravel road...Vickie

I don't mind back county roads at all. I love living in the country. When my hubby and I retire, we'll take a farm house anytime. More chance to be inspired to writing books.

Great story/poem!!

Omg, I love this, Sage! In my frame of self, tonight.

'while I wrote her a note, left it on
her seat, "suspicious minds are part
of backcountry roads" -'

I don't see any peace-filled endings, "suspicious minds are part
of backcountry roads." li=love it! I've traveled back-country roads...

I tend to stay off roads like that, never know what fearful problems lurk on those roads...e
