Fiction Paint: Mural Spirits
(The Morphine Overdose of Madam Pearl DeVere)
surreal
burros with
hooves of mineral
spirits, gold lodged in
the foot of 1897 wealth,
assayers of toil
packing pick and ax,
the miner struck illusion,
gold fever shot the neighbor
who reached into the packbag
for peace of mind - killer whiskey,
intoxicated sluice
boxes all crooked in
a row fell over, they couldn't
stand, painted ladies opened
their legs, the boxes flowed, the
vials filled, gold fever spread, shrugging
off local moralists' objections to prostitution,
politics shored
the mining timbers
head frames, staking claims,
the train brought her to claim the
madam's body, pale and still from
the overdose of morphine, when the
sister met the mortician, he unveiled
the madam's auburn hair, "but she was
a dressmaker, who is this! Let Cripple Creek
bury its own!" in refusal of the body, the preacher,
"Let he or she who is without sin, cast the first stone!"

and it is a solid message here (in my eyes at least)
who is without sin? No-one...we all decorate ourselves
with lessons, and wisdom which oddly is learned through
being a sinner...no amount of teaching and reading
can ever impact as the due course of living and walking
in the shoes we wear.
But there are those who do not wear false faces
such as myself...I am an out in the open sinner
so to speak of course since I love hair dye :)
I like to enhance my auburn mane
once to black and once to blond
but red moves me...

Amazing as usual...
let he who is without sin cast the first of stones
when Jesus walked that valley he took that walk alone
how many self-righteous will Saint Peter be lettin' in
more could boogie on the head of a pin....
Thank you so much for the kind words of encouragement that you had for Beth.
duke larance -- the drugstore cowboy poet
Hurled a stone
Struck the preacher between the eyes
"Sin is in the eye of the beholder"
As the noose slowly squeezed
Out her last breath
She heard the Sheriff whisper
"No maam"
"Sin is in the eye of God"

sarcastic, even bit cynical to me - 'for peace of mind - killer whiskey', line i enjoy the most; and hoisting the usual irony of drinking, for it really does give some 'peace of mind'.
thank you!
Much peace, love and light,
Amber
