he hears his donkeys
braying. He peeks out the
window, but it’s too late for
praying. Out of nowhere, two
outlaws bust into the shack, Charlie
One Horse shoots the miner dead, they
take his gold,

"Grab the gold!
Christ look at all of
it, Charlie Boy! Gonna
swayback my horse."

"How the hell
we gonna smuggle
this much gold back
to Montana, Emilio?"

Emilio and Charlie One Horse
smelting gold in an old abandoned
smelter coke oven under a huge old
tree with a noose blowing in the wind
tied around a big branch,

Charlie One Horse
ladles the hot liquid gold
into a steel horseshoe mold,
"hot damn!"

Emilio says,
"nineteen hundred
degrees hot damn!"

"That the
melting point
in hell, Emilio?"

"El Diablo's
gold, Charlie Boy.
We best get these shoes
poured, head on to Kalispell—wagon load
of Tequila and furs heaped on top nobody
gringos ever be the wiser."

"What if one
of the horses throw
a shoe, huh, Emilio?"
