Bible Oh Bible Trail

the exact way
mary and jo minus seph
took to get from dodge city
to deadwood where cactus blooms
on the nativity trail through dirty rough terrain
to get to the clean whorehouse rooms

“you are a garden locked up
my sister my bride you are a spring
enclosed a sealed fountain song of songs 4:12"

"we've come across
three cisterns for collecting water
solomon's pools out here the land where
johnny ringo corpsed a man for ordering beer
instead of whiskey I'm so thirsty"

it took seven days
to get the whores to deadwood
the wagons loaded heavy with scripture
easy on the whores' thighs hell even one of the
whores threw in a verse matthew 26:41 "watch and pray
that you may not enter into temptation the spirit indeed is
willing but the flesh is weak”

it's closer than you think
the christ and the stone elixir of life
The Sundance Wives rejuvination the gold's
hidden in the ores lightning will strike and
a blackened substance will make us white and pure
again the transition of raven into a white dove minus one
where it went wrong the fire of duplicity the muzzle flash
of the devil's gun the prophecy foretold

woman of joaquin
was aboard she threw in
her own verse from start
to when she was done it
turned cold another fall came
"I woman of joaquin spent a quiet speechless
life frontier tin-roof homesteader moonshine cooking
in my jilly still fertile topsoil grows potent potato whiskey

"sheep tallow candle
lights my way to womb renewal
the intoxicating smell of breathable leather
inebriated on a woman's hide at my side-oats grama
dispersing seeds hiding secrets of a legendary time in
history when only vagabond wind whispered of two women's passion

"and so I
woman of joaquin
have love feelings for you
saved up the ashes to mix with water
for soapmaking the rainbarrel where I
wash your dull calico dress and with no bleach
I put a piece of blue calico to blue your white calico
and make your calf-skin topboots for wading through the
religious and political mud of this century...
I woman of joaquin..."

bibles and feedsack labels
busting open lust on pillowcase borders
praying in the back of wagons...bible oh bible trail

Whores traveling west, certainly carried Bibles, and some of them most certainly were lesbians even though they catered to men for money. As far as I know, unless global warming is worse than I think, there are no cactus growing naturally in Deadwood. I did, however, read a story once about a redwood tree thriving somewhere in the Midwest. ;-)

Look Away Silence by Edward Patterson

Martin Powers wanted an ironing board for Christmas. Instead, he got . . . Matthew Kieler, a non-returnable gift, but a gift that kept on giving. A powerful tale of survival, compassion and unapologetic love in the time of AIDS.
