Ballad of Sarah Telemonday

wanted poster traded
places with eights and aces
black widow centered in the web
prophecy amber foretold crow lines
in desperado faces the way it flies to
the reverend packing gold fever to the
jesus mines

undiluted whiskey bet fire
telotype machine clicking and clacking telegram
to sarah telemonday blindsided the hot wire she didn't
give a damn

billings kept its hours
buffalo grass and pulpit flowers
she kept her secrets told the operator
to close one eye so he could only see half
of what it said her voice as shapely as the
hourglass figure on the black widow "need I remind
you that gossip is cheap and repeated as such is a
vile campaign and waste of time see you in church on sunday"

sarah telemonday
hid the fire bead
in the prayer wheel
dish of the aged roulette
she swore to the Powder River Jesus
she would profit from the reverend's debt
around and around she goes where she stops
nobody knows it's a cross† to die for but that's
another episode
