My long time friend, Frank Garhen taught me how to read. Yes, before I was mentored by Frank I hardly ever finished a book and I did not read for pleasure. Taking his Reading Enhancement course changed my life. Now I teach have passed on the techniques I learned from him to others. What a blessing! So I wrote this poem for his retirement ceremony.

The Legacy of Frank Gahren Frank Gahren A great instructor, encourager and friend He knows who he is and does not pretend Frank Gahren A kindhearted teacher who influenced so many in countless in ways We are now much better bibliophiles (readers) than we were yesterday Frank Gahren As a disciple of yours I was able to teach others reading enhancement techniques For a student who rarely finished a book this was a miracle that was rather unique Dear Frank, You’ve accomplished all of this and so much more In twenty-years you opened many closed doors Doors that would have never graduated and forged ahead Opportunities that would have been passed by instead So how can we express thanks to Frank for all he’s done throughout his career? We can teach our friends and family the gift that he bestowed upon us An extraordinary way of reading that will endure throughout the years “Thank you Frank” for all you have done for me and so many others Just know I will always think of you as a cherished Christian brother! I can't remember the teacher who turned me on to reading but she gave me a gift beyond measure. Later, other teachers taught me nuances of reading that can only come with growing maturity and discernment. All of them gave me keys to other worlds and greater minds. I find it hard to believe that anyone who reads is truly narrow minded unless they choose to be.

I've had many mentors like Frank and honor them all and I can. But I should have known Frank like you because I have done a little reading over the years, so busy with my profession and writing for it. Lately I've been doing more reading, thanks to AD.

I can't imagine going through this old world and not reading books. I thrive on them. Been reading books since I was in grade school. I'm seventy-seven now and am still an avid reader. I've even written books! Books. Yes!
