The Hardest Time in My Life

October is that time of year again when I recall true horror. My first wife died one month before Thanksgiving over 30 years ago.

Poem Artwork

The hardest time I had in my life is when my first wife passed away

She died of cancer at 37 years, she went to be with The Lord that day

Her folks were at a party after the funeral smiling, making chatter

All I wanted to do was cry and crawl into a hole, for nothing really mattered

I thought why are these people smiling, putting on mask that was so fake?

They did not comfort me, I felt alone, numb and so sad, for God's sake.

I forgive them now for a time that I truly regret

But the impact this had on my life, I cannot seem to forget.

Peace be with all of you...

Amen

PRAISE GOD THAT YOU KNOW SHE IS AT REST, JOHN, IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD AND FEELING NO PAIN, IN ANY WAY. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD COMPLETELY FORGET DIFFICULT TIMES THAT GOD HAS BROUGHT US THROUGH. GOD ALLOWED IT FOR SOME GOOD REASON EVEN THOUGH, AT THE TIME, WE CANNOT SEE IT. THE STRENGTH THAT HE GIVES US TO GO THROUGH IS NOT ONLY FOR THEN BUT FOR EVERY DAY OF OUR LIVES...TO HELP SOMEONE ELSE GOING THROUGH PAINFUL, EMOTIONAL TIMES BY ENCOURAGING THEM TO LOOK TO THE GOD WHO YOU KNOW WILL BRING THEM OUT. GOD BLESSED YOU WITH A WONDERFUL NEW MATE, WHO LOVES YOU AND IS A GIFT FROM HIM...CHERISH HER AS SHE CHERISHES YOU...PRESS ON! NEVER FORGETTING, BUT NOT ALLOWING THE PAST TO DIM THE BRIGHTNESS OF YOUR PRESENT AND FUTURE HAPPINESS. FROM THE HARDEST TIME IN OUR LIVES...WE COME TO REALIZE WHEN GOD IS THE GREATEST IN OUR LIVES. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS*INSPIRATIONS

Brings back sad memories from the past
Of relatives who have long since passed
crying one moment laughing the next
their emotions so terribly mixed

I am always in a hurry to get away
I want to mourn I can not stay
alone to deal with my grief
then eventually find relief.

John,
Your poem makes us feel your tragic loss and the (I think some cases) insensitivity of family members and friends who don't really understand how you feel. In my case I usually just mutter a few words of sorrow and then shut up. Not a lot you can say to comfort someone in that situation,.

It is hard to smile after a funeral, especially for a family member. Jewish people sit Shiva after a funeral. I sat for my brother who died at the age of 35, and I found it hard to speak to people. Now I understand that they were only trying to comfort me.

So sorry to hear that you had no support during the death of your first wife; I am sure it was unusually hard for you. I am glad however that you have grown strong enough to forgive.
Thank you for sharing, and continued success!

That was a real blow. Especially if you had a very close working relationship. I think it's easier to make the transition if you've lived alone for some time. Then, it's easier to go back to living alone like you did before and not have to think of her every time something comes up that she always did for you.

About three years ago, my twin brother's second wife of 25 years, in great health and vigor, fell down an outdoor staircase from the second floor backward and died on the spot. Roger has taken to being single again quite well. But it's hard to say how much he grieved because I wasn't there. He seems to be quite happy and dating now.

Very touching. No matter what, death of a loved one is always hard to deal with because our emotions are laid bare, and raw. That's why it's important to focus on and remember the good.

Death is a time that touches our soul with sadness, and we feel the sorrow for the loss of someone we have loved. I know that somehow in knowing that our hearts cannot know that God in his mercy, always sends us the comfort that we need. I know that over the years your life has been blessed with Gods comfort and love. and your able to help others because of your loss. May you continue to write and bless others with your words.
