Competition in the Olympics is fierce. But as a kid, I ran, biked and skied on ice and snow. I won a few medals and sometimes I dream about that time. Where did it go?

Poem Artwork

We live in a world where folks like to compete

Perhaps it’s instinctive from cave man days

when competition meant, “Who will hunt for meat?”

Now we sit in a chair and watch them go, go, go...

While they run, jump, and ski just to win

fame and fortune and a medal that glows.

There’s one sport that is based on chasing a little puck

Players will fight and kill to control it

as they spin around in circles and try their luck!

Then the skiers jump and swoosh all about in the snow

 They are graceful and majestic

until they take a tumble and fall down way below!

Then there is sport with those floating disc

Players scrub the ice to control it

or they botch them up while taking a risk!

There are the snowboarders who toss about in the air

They pray for a smooth and gentle landing

or they fall on ice right over there (ouch!)!!!

The dancers on ice compete for the best score of all

They are beautiful to watch

until they too, are victims of a fall

Sports in the Olympics shows us how to compete

But before one will experience the glory

They must face the agony of defeat!

Amen!

WELL, THE WORD OF GOD SAYS THAT (PARAPHRASING)'ALL THINGS(GOOD OR BAD) THAT HAPPEN, GOD STILL CONTROLS IT TO TURN OUT 'FOR OUR GOOD'. IN OTHER WORDS...THERE ARE TIMES WHEN LOSING IS A BLESSING, FOR (PARAPHRASING)'WHAT DOES IT PROFIT A PERSON TO GAIN THE WHOLE WORLD BUT LOSE THEIR SOUL?' WHILE 'COMPETITION' IS GOOD...THERE HAS GOT TO BE A WAY TO GET UP AND OVER, WITHOUT PULLING SOMEBODY...DOWN AND UNDER. I KNOW SOMEONE HAS TO WIN WHEN COMPETING BUT REALLY I DO 'FEEL' FOR THE LOSER. FOR INSTANCE, THERE WAS A YOUNG GIRL IN ONE OF THE OLYMPIC SKATING COMPETITIONS THIS YEAR AND FROM THE PICTURES AND THE CAPTIONS...SHE COULDN'T MAKE THE CUT, SHE COULDN'T DO A TRIPLE FLIP, OR SOMETHING. I GIVE HER CREDIT FOR REPEATEDLY TRYING, BUT I NEVER EVEN LOOKED AT THE CLIP...I COULDN'T, I'M JUST THAT WAY. I DON'T DO THINGS TO COMPETE, I JUST LIVE FROM DAY TO DAY AND GIVE GOD THE GLORY FOR EVERYTHING AND WHAT HE ALLOWS TO HAPPEN...HAPPENS. I GUESS I COULD NEVER BE AN OLYMPIAN BUT I'M GREATER...I'M A CHILD OF THE KING! GREAT SHARING, JOHN, THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I agree. We must face the agony of defeat at some point in our lives.

Ah, that famous quote from the defunct Wide World of Sports. We used to do a little parody with, "Da stink of duh feet."

No longer able to wrestle, I went with a roommate to San Francisco to watch wrestling trials that he participated in. A bunch of really rough looking guys. My roommate was soundly defeated in his first and only match.

The Greeks started it as a substitute for war. The Romans cranked it up a bit with their Circus, with wars going on every day between gladiators keeping the masses sedated, and strangely, nonviolent. Today, from the NFL, NASCAR, the World Series, the World Cup and March Madness, we are very good at pitting cities against cities and countries against countries and colossal games of war using athletes as the motivation.

Let's face it, we love to see war and we love to see dramatic changes of fate and death and destruction to the losers!

Ron
