Will the wind blow again
Through the fragile branches,
The weeping, dragging leaves
Tipped in river water?
It is so quiet now, so peaceful—
The dark will descend before the
Wind lifts my arms skyward.
I will drag them then,
Like the Willow drags before me.
Let my nails scratch at the water
As they’ve scratched for air,
For wind, inside the wooden box.
I could tumble headfirst into the river,
Breathe in the fishy scent...
But for now, I am at peace.
No need to flow with the water,
No desire to go under, to let go,
Surrender...no, I am at peace,
If that’s what I can call it.
Temporary numbness,
Awaiting the wind.

This is a gorgeous dark piece. Your descriptive imagery is excellent Dena. Thank you!

I can hear the wind rustling the leaves on the branches as they sway and I can smell the wet dankness of the river... so solemn and so elegantly dark. This is a terrific poem! I am glad to have the opportunity to read work of this calibre! Outstanding, Dena!

Beautiful lines. Lovely poem, too.
