Aren't we tired of the madness? if not how many of our boys we need to offer on the altar of stupidity? Why go to the wrong places looking for an enemy that as been in the same place all the time? for how long we are going to be divided before we unite ourselves and tell the schmucks that enough is enough and get the hell out of our White House, Congress, and take with them the lobbyist and American blood sucking leeches?
Until then I think to have the Star and Stripes at half mast in my heart.

Poem Artwork

1944 WWII

A young soldier nineteen years old
in June of nineteen forty four stood
over a dead enemy soldier in Rheims
another one among many dead youths.

From his breast left pocket a picture
was trying to get out and peek up
one more time the clear blue sky with
the face of another mother waiting too.

Killing from a distance, you see them fall,
and keep going forward, soldiers don’t stop,
until confronted face to face with another
soldier that also have a mother and a gun.

1951 Korean War

That young soldier became more hardened
when a President send him to take Inchon,
when they were only yellow skinned ones,
just devils, the young soldier was told.

Thousand upon thousand the young soldier’s
gun cut them climbing the hill their lives short,
the stench of a dead generation of yellow devils
keep the nostrils of the young soldier close.

A few of their wounded were taken for care,
we were as their propaganda said the demons,
and those wounded found that we had like them
also a picture of a waiting mother back home.

1965 Vietnam

Many Ribbons and medals after our soldier isn’t
that young soldier any younger not anymore,
he was there because another President had said
that he should go there and hold the falling dominoes.

Over fifty six thousand of known and unknown buddies
left there the illusion of many mothers back home
of welcoming their offspring safe and so much proud
of another Veteran that serve his country in a war.

But they didn’t expected, those young soldiers
coming back after cheating death to be spitted upon
by the same America whose picture they carried
in a no man’s land with barbed wire and terror.

2003 Iraq

To the President to be, look at the lines of crosses
like white petrified lilies row after row after row
they are a few generation of American youths,
in Arlington where also you will found my wall.

Don’t tell me that the politicians of my land are
just a bunch a hillbilly shortsighted feudal folk
that will engage our beloved Nation in a whim
to show another schmuck who is stronger, and more.

Those that had been in combat knows all too well
that everyone loses before you draw the first blood,
the crosses, the wheelchairs Veterans, the mothers
still waiting, to the President to be…please, no more!

Truly powerful, and truly heartfelt, brother. We should all now have that Stars and Stripes at half mast, in our hearts and souls.

Including all the wars that came before it makes one wonder just when educated human beings are going to start behaving as such. I agree, "Old Glory" should remain at half mast until all mankind comes to their senses, whenever that may be.....

Be always safe,
Karen

Georg this was such a moving poem. I got a glimpse of war from your point of view and it is a point well taken. I don't believe in war, I hate violence and I pray for peace among all nations. Thanks for sharing... may all soldiers be freed from this war and brought back home safely.

Georg I hope someone is listening. Reminds me of the song "Does anybody know what time it is, does anybody really care?" The world is adrift on a sea of stupidity.

Excellent and heartbreaking review of war Georg! I do believe however, that not just a president, but the entire congress share the responsibility for going to war,and people have to be extra careful to know all there is about a person before voting for them!

Amen, Brother! War is a game for losers because no one ever wins a war. The best you can hope for is to lose the least. The real cost of war is at Arlington, and in the wounded minds of veterans, and in every mother's heart.

Powerful Georg, true so true, although I was a bit younger, but I heard the same story, laid in hospital with fifteen year olds no arms or legs, they had been told the same story, yet when we finally met human to human, you especially Americans were the most beautiful people, and to use a German word most every one a real Mensch. I am glad that in the new German Constitution embedded is the clause that, the forces can only be used to defend German soil, but as all human laws, God only knows, our new friends that fight in Afghanistan calling them cowards over here, there is always a new Hitler, or President waiting in the wings, to glorify, his or her name, no matter the cost, you could easily have written "Nothing New on the Western Front" Love and Blessings! A touching write that speaks to the heart! I too am tired of war, hearing about the war, reading about, viewing it on the news, explaining to my first graders...touching indeed!

I heard a great poem (elsewhere) the other day. It was titled "America needs a Buddhist President"...personally, I think that would take care of the "war and peace issue" *smiles*

Living through and remembering every one of these wars is what makes me more "dove" than "hawk". I will always support our military forces; always question the politician.
Bless you for writing this knowledgeable and revealing poem, Georg.

Those that forget history are condemned to repeat it. Over and over and over - time for new lessons.

Only thing, OUR guys are getting charged with war crimes, while the enemy uses their own women, children, disabled as human shields, as bombs ... madness.
