poetry
poems
A verbal composition
having the suggestive power
to engage
the feelings and imagination
hmmm
oft times when I want to share
a piece
I know might touch someone
I dare not say
I have a poem I want you to see
poetry has a bad rap
most times I just say
check this out
or
look at this piece
in explaining recently to a friend
a follower of the words I lay out
I described a poem
as
a story
one that can take a reader
to a place
to a feeling
in a short space
bring emotion
engage imagery
cause introspect
and mostly what one gets out
is what one brings in
life experiences
I know this place
I have felt this before
as seen through and felt through
another’s words
or
cause speculation as to
wanting to know this place
understanding and relating
to
as yet unknown emotion
one poem can mean
something altogether different
to someone else
even
to the author
I had a well-meaning friend
once say
do you still write ppppoetry
as though the word was somehow
obscene
strange
out of the ordinary
and that’s exactly how I felt
on hearing the stutter
yyyyyes I do
it is my life
it is what I do
I cccccan’t ssssstop
don’t want to
actually
I
am
a
poet
and I bring to each piece
a bit of my soul
and you may get it
and you may not
not my concern
my job
is to fit the words together
in such a design
as to conjure images
and in a way
as to help me remember
those sites and sounds and feelings
of
my own life
that touch me
move me
make me see something
small and yet significant
to be held up
to the light and examined time and again
as the jewel that it is
the moment
poetry
poems
if only more could realize
their worth

I'm with you Josie. In fact, just had this conversation last night with a cousin who thought something was wrong with her because she "didn't understand" a poem the same way as someone else did. Told her a poem is what it means to the poet, and the reader, but that they are not necessarily the same because we all see things through different experiences. If it's okay with you, I'll send this to her.

I couldn't agree more, Josie.
A poet's duty is to the words, and to himself. If you write for others, you head down a slippery slope.
