Thanksgiving Weekend

It’s the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend

Had relatives coming for lunch today

Spent all day Friday sprucing up the condo

Wanted all surfaces to sparkle like gold

Then there was the lunch meal to decide on

Should it be turkey, chicken, or fish

Could make an excuse to over-eat

And add scrumptious side-dishes

And all the UNNECESSARY trimmings

In the end decided to be healthy

And put together a seafood platter

With a scoop or two of mashed yams

Coupled with tasty green peas

Now we would have had a

Green salad for starters

But wouldn’t you know

There’s an E-coli scare on letteuce

Dessert was a fresh home-made fruit salad

Topped with frozen low-fat yogurt

Company appreciated the healthy choice

Thought it a great change from

The gobble, gobble, turkey kind

We went for a walk thereafter

To enjoy God’s beautiful sunshine!

What I like best about thanksgiving

(Also called harvest where I’m originally from)

Are the hymns we sing in praise and thanks to God

For providing the food we eat

One chorus from a favourite hymn goes like this:

“All good gifts around us

Are sent from heaven above

Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord

For all His love…”

Here are words from another favourite harvest hymn

“We plough the field and scatter

The good seed on the land

But it is fed and watered

By God’s almighty hand…”

Tomorrow at church

I’ll have the opportunity to sing praises to God

And give thanks for His love and compassion

On this another Harvest (Thanksgiving) day

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
