Politicians are always telling us to get back to basics, in education, work and society. So here we get back to basics in poetry with rhyming couplets.

Some people claim to be the Lords of Rhyme
But they use the same syllable for every line
And rhyme that word line after line
And the rhyme just gets boring after a time;

Cheap tricks like that are no good to me
'Cos I like to set my vocabulary free
And stretch my rhymes to infinity
To emphasise my message positively.

The spirit that guides my words to the page
Has been helping rhymers since the prehistoric age

When Imhotep raised his megalith
My guiding spirit rhymed the hieroglyph

And as great Agammemnon stormed the walls of Troy
The Genie helped write the story of a wooden decoy.

In the ruins of Pompeii, drowning in volcanic ash
As Vespasian passed on the Imperial sash

The genie helped craft the latin rhythmus
Anyone blind to the pattern suffers from strabismus.

In the New World; The ziggaurats of Teotihuacán
Are inscribed with the legends of a civilisation

That died before Cortés and his conquistadores
Arrived to impose European Christian mores.

Throughout the renaissance and the age of reason
There were poets writing rhyme for every season

There was Metaphysical, Idealist and Romantic,
The Neo-classicists were more pedantic

Modernists did not write traditionally
But composed their verse unstructured and free

In spite of new philosophies and differences of style
The Rhyming spirit always used his wit and guile

To guide poets through the paradigm
And find a way to make their couplets rhyme.

FOOTNOTE: Somebody told a friend of mine in a very condescending way that raps, rants and hip - hop lyrics are not poetry and have no business here. As somebody very highly educated in English Literature I decided to repost this as a way of saying "BRING HIM ON." Rhyme does not belong to a particular style of poetry but can be used any way we like

it did dupe me i must confess as the first part is a beautiful piece
of rap rhyming poesy & the second part alters on that, quite a haul the configurations in their historical contexts & travesties as theyve come down in the genie tumble of bric a brac rhyme where yet we sign hasta y hacia robin

Okay, all right, let's break it up in here. Don't go and get rowdy and stuff. ;-)
Love ya, mean it, sexy man.

"The King of Couplets" stimulates the mind and prods the wings of imagination... It gives a general idea of the ideal poetic essence, instructs and opens the doors to a learning discussion.

I like this composition, and have enjoyed its general messages, inclusive the historical flashes.

this is so wonderful. i, too, loved rap in its early days and still make up little dittys while walking around the house, to the eternal annoyance of my 11-year-old who begs me not to do so in public. awesome statement you've made here, too!

Ian, first of all this is an amazing write! Enjoyed it to the fullest.
I too at first really thought the younger generation had come up with something I may grow to appreciate when they first started rap..but as they continued, not only did the words grow intensively boring but the messages some turned to were disgusting and vile. So..I turned them off and tuned them out. Hoping wishing and praying that my children would do the same...they didn't. But that's neither here nor there...
I believe art has it's place, and that is where ever the author chooses to share it...otherwise..we are censoring in the same way we fight so earnestly against.
