The Wisdom Of Crowds

Never try to swim against the tide,
just follow where you're led
beyond the place where maidens danced
and where the warriors bled
to desensitized nirvana where
contempt of gods is bred.

So goes the mantra of the crowd.
It is the nature of the beast
to worm its way into weak minds
where will resists the least.
Thus independence is diminished
while conformity is increased

by the way they trade individualism
for the sanctuary of the mass
and always make the correct choice
by income group or social class.
In anonymity they hide
to let fulfilment pass

They seek their entertainment
in novelty and sensation
as a million celebrity martyrs vie
for public affirmation
and for fifteen minutes fame will risk
lives of humiliation.

Always what is new is prized
above what may be good.
Go beyond the bread and circuses,
offer mental pain, not blood.
The crowd knows what is popular,
quality is misunderstoood.

The fear of being different
feeds eagerness to confrom.
Safety is found in numbers
loss of self lies in the norm,
but what is self compared to
the comfort of the swarm.

but propaganda undermines
the desire to be free
makes us forsake the foundation
of  our own identity
and insecurity once seeded
turns us from our destiny.

At last each human being
is subjected by group will.
Freedom of thought, freedom to act?
Freedom to tread the mill.
Mistrust of what is different
feeds an urge to kill.

Freethinkers are maginalised
and treated with suspicion,
that they march to a different beat
makes them objects of derision;
an independent point of view
is a treatable condition.

So the wisdom of the crowd
simplifies what's comlicated.
The infinite wonder of human minds
so easily manipulated.
Psychology turns lions into sheep
as is clearly demonstrated.
