Clear Night

On a moonless night such as this,
when freezing air turns breath to mist
and lonliness bites sharper than
the icy chill that gnaws my face .


Looking at the dark sky,it is
easy to imagine you are close.
In multitudinous darkness
stars send light across distances
beyond comprehension, reducing
five thousand miles to a mere step,
to bring you here, close my side.


And in your glow the darkness melts,
warmth wraps around me like a quilt,
I close my eyes to see you fill
the whole universe with a smile.
