I decided to trot this oldie out again as we are marking disability awareness week or something over here.
The poem describes my situation some years ago.

When I was young, a child,
how I wished I had magic
to do wonderous things,
make bullies heads explode
just by staring at them,
"Oi Thorpy," they would say
"what are you staring at?"
And then KAPOW !
Blood brains and eyeballs
everywhere. Or sometimes
I would wish to make myself
invisible, Then I could say
"it wasn’t ME, I wasn’t THERE.
Nobody saw me!"

Now forty years and
a serious illness later
I have found the secret;
the spell to make myself
invisible. Its simple,
people don’t see things
that embarrass, so
I just became disabled.
I sit here in my wheelchair
And people talk to my wife;
over my head they say
"How’s Ian, is he improving ?
Are his spirits good ?
Will he walk again ?
He was such an active man,
Will he ever be the same ?"
I want to shout "It’s ME,
I’m HERE ! Ask me!"
But I have made myself invisible
And cannot undo the spell.

Governments may be full of good intentions and politically correct principles but unless they are willing to listen to disabled people and thus gain understanding of the problem they will never be able to solve it. Failing Disabled People

It needed to be expressed, Ian; you've done it and it is a good thing too. A lesson to be learned. Thank you. Love and peace to you.

Ian, I thought I reviewed this. I must've read it and then been kicked off or something. This is a strong write, and I've heard those who must get around in wheel chairs voice similar sentiments before. I think because of my aunt, I don't do this, but I know people do. I've seen them do it. People avert their eyes at anything that makes them feel uncomfortable, and often that's any reminder of human frailty or mortality, but as Jude says, that's their problem.

Ian, this is heart wrenching. How could anyone think you to be invisible, wheel chair or not. You are such a dynamic person. This poem should be sent out to every person on this planet so that no one is every made to feel invisible again.

Love,
Sara

did you make yourself invisible? not really, it's ignorance that prevents being seen ...

It would seem, by your above write, that "they/people" had a greater disability than you! You could never be invisible, Ian. Your intellect, wit and creativity are too readily seen! Merry Christmas, poet!

Ian this is both sad and wonderful. The wonderful part is that you have learned how to deal with ignorance. Thanks for sharing!

Love,
Eileen
