A little verse drama about those love/hate relationships some people find so addictive.

As the mouth moves to kiss the angry fist,
As the wound embraces the blade,
That's the way love has to be for us,
A destructive masquerade.

Hungry hearts and angry minds
Are the only things we share,
So the screaming and fighting always start
When we ought to show we care.

And passion turns to violence,
Love is consummated in blood.
Somehow we can never find the words
To make feelings understood.

Like a slave bound to a treadmill,
Like a beast locked in a cage,
We are each trapped in our ignorance
And our only outlet is rage.

As the mouth moves to kiss the angry fist,
As the would embraces the blade,
This love will be the end of us,
A destructive masquerade.

Ouch! Is that love? No, I think that's called, "insanity!" Very well expressed, Ian.

Ian,

I agree with the comments you have received on this one...it is vicious cycle that, unfortunately, can be very hard to break.

Tinka is right, you did nail this one, you really summed up in a perfect amount of words this addiction to bad love that many many people seem to have, probably because they don't know how to be anything but victims-I have a suggestion, but take it with a grain of salt because I probably have no clue what I am talking about, but I wonder if the beat would be better in the verse that ends,"And our only outlet is rage," if it were "With our only outlet, rage." Just a thought :)

Well, you are certainly right about ignorance.
Having worked at a shelter for women, it is amazing what women and men put up with and call love. Makes you wonder if this is really "civilization" or "knuckles still dragging on the ground" mentality, and with few expectations of it to improve. Makes one wonder what the "models" were for love to have them so skewed.

Thoughtful one, Ian. Bravo.
