I want that old thing back, the tunes songs that croon the wide legs jeans with the rainbow colored moon, the sidewalk lights that lit up the sky…skating to Kool & The Gang while eating a Moonpie. The lazy summer days and cool summer nights, sitting on the porch front playing jacks, sipping grape koolaid from the grocery six pack…..Chic jeans was the thing and white Jack Purcells, running three blocks to catch the sound of ice cream bells….thunderstorms raging as we played through the rain, skipping the roofs to go watch Soul Train.
Marshmallows in the cocoa as you swayed to Peabo, Rock With You the neighborhood flow, Earth Wind & Fire in late night creep, basement chill parties with the blue light sneak……slow dancing to the Whispers and kissing on the neck, the old time religion when women kept you in check, sassy like Coffy mean like Shaft remember Calgon was the fragrance for your bath, high afros was the sexy natural look, Nancy Drew and harlequin was New York’s best books, Creature Feature had you screaming, Leon Issac Kennedy had you creaming, Tang for breakfast with Saturday cartoons, Captain caveman and The Archies and the Jetsons theme tune, no killings or shootings, no crack or meth, just an occasional beat down or hit and run death, no kidnapped children or neighborhood pedophiles, the drunks on the corner harmonizing for your pleasure, many mothers raising the village, many fathers kept vigilant watch, pigtails and innocence, laughter and essence….

Glory days when poor wasn’t recognized, fake hair hadn’t materialized, body parts were naturally home grown, soul sisters with personality and true intent being decent never to relent being content with amazement while curious about the intent of a kiss or hug…blushing into forever but dare never give up the clever clover moreover to keep her feminine wiles for one perfect lover taught morals and principles self worth when little girls were raised to be wives and not mistresses on dirty mattresses and little boys taught to respect a woman love a woman honor and cherish the woman the mother and giver of life as a wife to obey the vows under God…..

I want the old thing back, in the front yard running wild playing Spades till the stars light the back of the BEE cards, laughing at the dozens, kissing distant cousins, crushing on the boy in the class with tortoise shell glasses, tight soccer shorts and knee high socks, at the local pond skipping rocks while the boys swung over the stream in an old spare tire, Brownies and Boy Scouts huddled by a fire, block parties, school bake sales, Alexander the Grape, and sea monkey tales, comic book trading, and passing notes, meeting in the cafeteria buying butter crunch cookies to sneak in English, the old thing back, the way we loved without fear …that one special soon you loved to hear….whether Luther & Cheryl…this world is mine….fantasizing about Billy Dee or Rick & Teena Marie….the old things can sometimes be better than the new things….try it for yourself so you can see….the purest thing to feel….is naturally…beautifully……and blessedly…aged.
