Sunless Skies



I know the feel of sunless skies
Where clouds choke off the light;
I’ve looked through blurry, jaundiced eyes
With vision full of blight.

I’ve touched the void of hopelessness
From reaching out in vain,
Experienced the angry sting
Of misdirected pain.

How strong the great temptation be
To fade into the dust,
Forsaking other voices as
Unworthy of my trust.

The shadows that surround me now
Are easy to embrace;
Surrendering within their grip,
I loathe my time and place.

As moments of my life proceed
Toward some predestined shore,
My footprints soon will disappear
Beneath forgotten lore.

Some may behold a step or two
Before they find it best
To leave my moments to the past
And not disturb their rest.
