Taken from my upcoming poetry book "Mamma Bought Me A Trumpet" (coming in 2004)
When you’ve seen the things I’ve seen, then you can say the things I say,
Like I just seen myself at Madison Square Garden just the other day,
I found myself inside a boxing ring with gloves on and a mouthpiece-
White with black trimmed trunks and a swift right hand blocking my opponents punch,
They were calling me Joe Frazier I kept looking at my gloves I just knew it couldn’t be,
My opponent kept saying “Float like a butterfly sting like a bee,”
The announcer kept saying his name was pronounced Muhaammid Ali,
We exchanged punches round after round this couldn’t get any realer,
Looking back through my scrap book people called it The Thrilla In Manilla
My poetry book "Mamma Bought Me A Trumpet" will be here soon!
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
