A Song Inspired by Langston Hughes

“In My Dreams”


Dare I close my eyes on a cloudy day and ponder while the rain beats against the rooftop,
Walking down the streets of Cincinnati that’s me holding the sign that says “The injustice needs to stop!”
How dare I dream of cotton candy skies and Ferris wheel sunshine-
I can see myself sitting on the top of a house with Stevie Wonder singing Isn’t She Lovely although in the bubbles to the side of my head he wasn’t blind,
The deaf man could hear me as I recited the songs of my soul while we both watched a kite,
A man hummed melodies to accompany my poems his voice had infinite bass, he said his name was Barry White,
I didn’t want to open my eyes; this new found passion of dreaming in color was almost kept,
Until I found myself marching down the gray and black streets of America as a follower of Malcom-X,
Dreams can come true , I didn’t listen to that old saying “never say never,”
Until I found myself back in the state of Mississpi to see the face of my slain father his name was Medgar Evers
