What Means this Thing called Time?

I did some math and though I never gave a thought of just how many days I have lived I find that I have existed on this earth 22,477 days. Now that makes me feel old. I don’t even want to count the seconds. One thing I know about life is that we should live each and every day for all its worth. Yesterday is past, tomorrow may never come. That leaves us with today. That is why it is called the present. Every one of those days I have lived have been a present from God. I only want to thank him and praise him for each of them.

What Means this Thing called Time?

My mind dwells upon Yesterday for then it was today.
Alas yesterday is no longer today for time has moved it out of the way.
Yesterday brings memories of something in my past
For it was always doomed that yesterday should never last.
But in the greater scheme of history God has worked his will.
Out of the void left by yesterday came a new day that void to fill.
For when yesterday relinquished its title of today
It made room for a replacement of what was yesterday.
Now today is here for a short time given by God for us to live.
Is today not a good time for us to love others and for us to give?
For, oh too soon today you see will become yesterday
For this day that we now call today was never really meant to stay
And tomorrow will fill the void left by today and become a new day
As today, just as yesterday reluctantly relinquishes its place.
Tomorrow will then become a new day another today for us to face
And so forth the next day and then the next each a part of life’s hectic race.
Yes, all of my yesterdays have gone away.
They have left me feeling older, my hair turning gray
But I care not that the days, months and years pass so quickly by.
I care not because each new day I awaken with a sigh.
Today is here and today is now.
Yesterday is a memory that stays with me somehow.
I pray to God only that I have learned from yesterday.
I pray that I have grown stronger to live a better today.
Just as God gave me yesterday and blessed me with the day before
He gave me love and forgiveness, I can ask for nothing more.
Don’t count the days, my friend for it is better that we should live them.
Let us sing praises to God and live all your today’s giving ourselves over to him.

Well written and nicely said. I was once told that if I hurried I’d be late. Ever since then I’ve taken my time and enjoyed the scenery along the way, and yet I still manage to arrive on time.

"Is today not a good time for us to love others and for us to give?"

For me, this one line stands as the monument to the piece you have written here Lew.

"The present is a vessel
from which we write upon the waters
both our past and our future."

Good one, Lew. I use yesterday to make me better today, and hopefully look forward to keep improving as all todays keep becoming yesterdays and tomorrow becomes today. Okay, I hope that makes sense! :)

Love and peace
Lena
