Compassion is in the eye of the beholder.

Somewhere

I stopped for the night,
for a little respite,
on my journey to nowhere.

I knocked on your door,
and you opened it wide,
right then and there.

You had nothing to fear,
for many a year,
there but for fortune,
you were I.

We sat down to enjoy,
a bountiful table.
For that year you were able,
to mightily employ.

The best that there was,
to fulfill the cause,
you were destined,
to generously deploy.

The temperature dropped,
and the stars came out,
but snug by the fire,
we talked.

I asked you why,
you let me in,
when so many others,
had balked.

"The night is full,
of men like you.
But you were different,
from the rest."

"Your eyes were as bright,
as the evening starlight,
and so you passed the test."

"A humble man of means,
or so it seems, for your mind,
is among the very best."

We chatted until sleep,
overcame our eyes.
I awoke in a soft bed,
and not my demise.

For I was saved from nowhere,
by a roll of the dice.
By a stranger in waiting,
both kind and nice.

Ronald, your poem "Somewhere" touched me deeply. Even though you stated that you were on a journey to nowhere and had been denied entrance into... by others who had balked at your knock at their doors, someone who said, when you inquired as to why she had been open to you, a stranger: "The night is full of men like you, but you were different from the rest," let you into not only into her house but into her heart where you spent an intimate night. You concluded, "For I was saved from nowhere by the roll of the dice." But you were probably saved by someone who looked into your eyes and saw your soul, the soul of a unique and caring person. Let me use this opportunity to say, Ronald I appreciate your comments on my poetry, the latest being your comment on "Longevity or Not?" Although I do not comment on many of your poems that I read and appreciate, I recognize that you are insightful and possess wisdom that I seldom encounter. You have been blessed to be a blessing. And so it is. Thank you.
In mutuality,
Uriah J. Fields

What would you do If a homeless man, or Jesus for that matter, came to your door? Slam it in his face? Or let him in.

The simplicity of this tale evokes in this reader the overly complicated concerns we sometimes get bogged down in. There is much of the Zen philosophy in these few words. Thank you for posting.

A pleasing tale you have woven to the hearth.

Some good thoughts here, Ron. Why do we have more of an empathy with some people that others. I'm glad your road to nowhere led to a new friend. cheers

I can relate to that, and one of the reasons that I now save pets from nowhere.

Nery nice, very sweet, very romantic.....I can picture myself in the lce of the poet: a wayfaring stranger who knocks on a door at random and is recievedf in a way he never expected.

This sounds like a night planned in heaven. I would so much rather have a relationship with a mind than a body. I'm happy to read this.

Love ya!
