The future is an enigma, but history shows us that for people (not just us in the United States) conditions get better every year. And, politicians always state that they can make things better if the people go along with them and their dreams for making things better. It will be a combination of entrepreneurial spirit and social reformation that will continue to make life better, regardless of unforeseen events to come. In fact, things are so good for us right now, it's time we start saving the earth from our excess. After all, for now, we still live here on our only Earth.

Imagining

Imagining what it will be like,
in fifty years or more.

Will it be like all the dire predictions?
Or will it be mostly like today, or before.

We cannot imagine the future,
for some things remain unseen.

But we can shape the way the future is,
if we only imagine and work the dream.

The future can be bright and open to all,
or it can be a dark and dreary place.

It is in our power to make it so,
as we view it through misty glass.

But the future is never as bad or bright,
as those two imagined extremes.

The future will contain magical discoveries,
far beyond our wildest dreams.

The future comes too fast for some,
they wax nostalgic about what they've lost.

Today we all have bucket lists to explore,
in good old days, few could afford the cost.

We have the conveniences of kings,
and choices that only they could bare.

The future remains wide open,
as avenues open to those who dare.

So relax and work on being happy,
don't fret about what you think is gone.

Just think about the wonders to come,
join in and discover, that life is, and can be, fun.

I AGREE. WE CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR US AND I, AMONG MANY, AM ANXIOUSLY EMBRACING, AND CAN HARDLY WAIT, FOR ALL THE SURE, MARVELOUS THINGS THAT WE WILL BE EXPERIENCING IN...WHAT SEEMS LIKE...THE VERY NEAR FUTURE. THANKS FOR SHARING, RON. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

A promising out look on days to come and something that is needed to brighten one's day. I often wonder what the world of tomorrow will be like. Unfortunately it does not look as bright and promising as it once did. I expect Florida will be partially under water due to global warming. Food will be in great demand, perhaps dehydrated. The value of a dollar will be much less( If we even have paper money by then)More strides concerning health issues will be made. Robots will be in many homes. I think we'll fly from place to place and that BIG Brother will be watching all of us. I wonder if books will even exist.I hope we will still be free,A ONE NATION UNDER GOD COUNTRY! I could go on and on ... These thoughts are just a few to contemplate. Blessings to You ....M

I love this poem, Ron. I really do. But I must confess that my imaginings are slowly being snuffed out because of daily chronic pain. It seems that things are happening way too fast for me to process it all. It is difficult to think...to recall...to write...to desire. Again, this is a lovely write, and I found great joy from reading it several times. Thank you.

I ofyen wonder why the media focuses so much on the bad stuff. We, like children after a scary movie, being tucked in bed are more likely to dream of that forboding doom. It is a shame more attention is not given over to the positive, the good things, the possibilities that you note could make us better off, give us joy, or at least a little piece of mind.

Another Hallmark moment. Being honest with yourself is the key. I'm a realist first (philosophically), not a dreamer. It's wonderful to dream, and I always have. Still do. I have found unexpected success that started with dreaming. And it's healthy to hope, too, and to remain positive, and be thankful in all things; even the bad things. There's a lesson to be learned in everything we go through. IMO it's far better to get your eyes off yourself and extend your hand to those in need. Someone thinking that conditions in the USA are better than they've ever been is a dreamer looking at reality from inside a fishbowl. Far too many draw their conclusions from what they see on TV, not by getting out and mingling with the hoi polloi in the real world. If one did, they would realize that there are scads of miserably oppressed, financially impoverished, sick, spiritually dead, and forsaken individuals who are desperate for the palpable fruit of a dreamers dreams. An interesting personal opinion. Peace to you...

Good news on any Sunday, Ron. We can carry a bucket in each hand, one caring for the future, the other holding enjoyment of the day ... a fine reminder, well and gently crafted.

You post on Saturday, but it arrives on my doorstep on Sunday morning, since I am about 10 hours ahead of you. When I saw the title, I was immediately intrigued. Your poem is less a take on the future and more on our attitudes toward the future. That after all will do more to shape future's arrival "for those who dare". Good work here, one of your better poems. John

One's outlook is shaped by one's circumstances, oftentimes narrowing down the perspective to an immediate future rather than long-range.

That said, you nailed it:

The future can be bright and open to all,

or it can be a dark and dreary place.

Yep, we most definitely can "work the dream," and I am hopeful that it will come to pass.

With so much of "happiness" bubbled in material stuff, your poem is both encouraging and foretelling of what might still remain: a future of agonizing over what we don't have. I've been a millionaire, and now I live a very spartan life by choice. My future brought me happiness like I would have never thought possible. The future is mostly about what you make of being honest with yourself; acknowledging your weaknesses, and developing your strengths. Thank you for posting what Jane called "slap in the face..."
