about one of my "Kids"

At the mere mention of his name

Teachers and administrators alike,

Rolled their eyes and couldn’t wait to share

Their own personal horror stories

When I called his previous school for his file

Applause echoed through the phone lines

So…with interest and a bit of apprehension

I awaited the file and the boy.

He swaggered through my door

A mixture of Leif Erickson, Peter Frampton,

Tarzan’s son, and Wolf boy.

Showing perfect teeth

His grin lit up the room

And his wild yellow hair

Spilled beautifully over his ears

Now, several months into the year

He sits still for more than 2 minutes at a time

Computes mathematics and has raised his reading level

Most of the time he remembers to raise his hand

Says “please”, “thank you” and “I’m sorry”

This wild boy helps the severely handicapped

And he brings a bit of magic to every day

How lucky to have this 90 pound wild boy

A part this school-teacher’s day

I have a student just as the one you've described so well in my classroom...I had the choice of retaining him last year, for he wasn't exactly where I thought he should be academically, and he was very inmature, I made the decision to retain him and all the other teachers even asked me "Are you sure???" I told them I was following my instinct and my gut said to keep him one more year for his own good, and maybe my insanity...the year is now half gone and I hardly know he is in the room, he has raised his grades, has matured unbelievable, an entirely different child, however occasionally when he smiles I can still see the mischievious little boy from last year still there, he is not perfect by far, but much more settled. Even my principal was bragging on him and my decision to keep him one more year. Great write my friend, one that I as a teacher and a mother can relate well with.
Blessings,
Joyce Bowling

Sometimes when we touch a heart we touch the mind and this is to me what the very essence of a teacher should be. He will remember you a long time after he leaves your school.

If people would stop labeling and give so called "bad" kids a chance, they will shine. :) Most wonderful, Karen.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
