No antique chairs or ceramic bowls for me
Across the seas from a faraway land
Nor grand estates or spreads of land -
The dwellings of parents and grand folks of long ago
But, maternally, I have inherited a sense of rhythm
A life long love for my best friend, the horse
And stubbornness unequalled, (which time has helped me to tame)
Followed by a desire for knowledge, and the ability to learn
My father has imparted to me
A love of life and the desire
To search for what is right and good in the world
And that people, not things are what truly make life work
I am so very fortunate to have had these gifts imparted
By my folks along the bumpy paths we’ve traveled
My inheritance received while all are living, learning, loving
Pushing ever forward-imparting keys to better living

"On cold winter mornings
we descended in the oil-soaked gas station
to the dark, low-ceilinged cellar,
where the big smokey coal furnace burned,
with a loaf of raisen bread."-Peggy McCardle, "Pop"

By my folks along the bumpy paths we’ve traveled
A Grand Inheritance, I'd say.
Thank you for sharing this poem and I hope others will learn from its perspective.
