The Thunder Rock

in the third grade class there was a "discovery table"

Filled with things to touch, weigh, measure and explore

She stood quietly there, her fingers gingerly stroking

The rough outside of a geode, or “Thunder rock”

As she turned the rock, her eyes brightened in wonder

At the crystalline forms that sparkled

The shades fading from brilliant purple to crystal clear

Spellbound and silent, her hands explored its beauty

Until , at last, and a bit reluctantly, she set it back in its place

“You know”, she said looking up into her teacher’s eyes

“That rock is like some people, rough on the outside, but beautiful within”

As her words drifted into oblivion, that room, for several seconds,

Was silent

I love the way teachers can impact the lives of those under their instruction with such wondrous and imagination-capturing statements. The best teach us how to make the quantum leap in our thinking between one set of parameters and another, comparing unlike substances and concepts. And, as we ALL know, some of the best teachers are those who are only just starting to learn, when their minds are untrammelled and non-prescriptive. Love the freshness and vibrancy in this. You let the thoughts carry themselves. TY Kate xx

So true Karen, I have often said to my children, don't judge them from the outside, look into their hearts. Great write.

My daughter and I loved "The Thunder Rock". The author does not talk down to children. Instead, she lifts them up with her tale of exploration and beauty.

Have never heard of a thunder-rock. Cool. You not only educate children, Karen, but adults as well. Thank you.

I always heard thunder was angels bowling in Heaven. :) When it suddenly thudded, that was a gutter-ball. LOL

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Now: why are they called thunder-rocks?
