To Nurture Herself

This is one the most difficult write I have done-I have known this child fr a couple of years and she has touched me deeply-i cannot well relay her story here so this is my feeble attempt

A beautiful girl child

In my classroom every morn

The minute my key turns the lock

I haven’t even set down my things

As she tells me how she feels,

What is up, what is down

Inevitably, the tales are sad and weave

A tale of discontent and depression

A mom so mentally incompetent

That she cannot be unselfish enough

To care for these needs of her girl

And a father who chooses not to

With blame implied

The mother’s cruelty haunts her child

“If only you were the kind of child I wanted,

If not for you and your needs, we would have more.”

As the words tumble out, the child is reduced

To a curled up lump, on a oversized office chair

Family services says their hands are tied

So, her teachers assume the role to teach this young girl

To cope with her life and learn to survive it

For in the end, she must learn to nurture herself

And to grow and thrive, and smile and laugh

And love, yes, love the life she has

This brings tears to my eyes. How can family services do NOTHING? Arghhhhhhhhh! She is blessed to have teachers who are willing to give her the tools to rise above all this negativity in her family life. All I have to offer is my prayers - for she, you and that her parents will have the strength to brighten the life of THEIR child.

God bless you. Thank you for bringing her into my world, so that I might keep her in my prayers. Kathy

good job Karen and understandable, reminds me of Blunt I just wrote. It seems some parents spoil too much, like my mom and others are really monsters

I have a friend who was a substitute teacher, at one time. She would go to garage sales on the weekends to buy shoes and lunch pails, clothes...anything for her kids! AND, This is America?

Your pen proves that you, truly are one of those, "teachers" that have the passion to do so...over and beyond any curriculum!
God Bless you and all the little children!
Love and Peace~

I have a couple of friends who are teachers and they tell me this story over and over again. Good poem and a message that cannot be repeated too often. So many people need to be made aware of their responsibilities to the world and to themselves and the children they make.

Teachers are a type of physician of the heart for many kids. You are the closest to a hero that they will know. I'm sure your guidance will go along way in helping her survive.

I hope many (she has you) friends ENTER and STAY in this little girls LIFE and LOVE and CARE about her as strongly as you do Karen!
This touched my heart deeply, I know many as I listen to them speak as I drive, and I decide...Should I write an incident report this time, I know she only did that for attention, but we must make them UNDERSTAND the BEST we can! as I still do, because I care and send it along with a loving prayer!
Warmest Blessings! and Light, Warrior Lady Sheeeoox

STay Positive! Through it ALL! HEAD UP! Smile ON!

Tragic and yet not an uncommon theme at all for those of us who are in the classrooms of our nations. It is good that you are there for her, Karen. Love and best wishes,

Regis

Oh Karen, how this crushed my heart as I read it! I'm so thankful she has someone like you & the other teachers to bring some care and attention to her much needed needs. I'm praying God will touch her with some form of happiness & give her something to look forward to in her life. It's so sad to see innocent children being mistreated and left to feel unloved and unwanted. You've given this reader something to dwell upon and to pray about...I pray others in her neighborhood will become aware and will reach out to touch her life in some way, and I'm praying God gives you all the words she needs to hear.

This is an awful situation. Poor little angel! People should not be allowed to have children until they know who they are.

Karen,
You said it well. I understand. It is so difficult to keep yourself disconnected from this pain. One must do their best to help without it affecting our lives. It is a most troubling world in which we live in.

"They" think that teachers are responsible for the completeness of what is lacking in the home life of troubled students. This is so unfair, but none the less, we are driven as teachers to help as much as our capabilities allow. Do not blame or feel guilty for anything. You are truly doing your best. You are an awesome teacher and you must always remember this.
Peace, Love, and Light,
Amber "V"

We as adults whether we be teachers, guidance counselors, neighbours relatives or friends are the ones who must reach out to these little kids to offer our love and support if they aren't getting that from who should be offering it.

Karen, as a teacher for many years I can certainly relate to your experiences with this child. I've been there, and its really heartbreaking that we can't take away a child's pain. You are so right about her needing to learn to nurture herself and cope. You got your message across very well--even if it was difficult.

Heartless parents a bane on mankind. You have portrayed her plight very well and I pray she will not be scared for life but with teachers such as your self she will see how loving people can be.
