Poem Artwork

A summer born colt

Weaned from his mom

Before she could teach him

About ice

One front leg shot out

For no apparent reason, he didn’t move it

He just looked right down at that wayward hoof

With so young and questioning eyes

Another step and a hind leg shot left

Then the other one shot right

With a quizzical look of surprise

He stood still and didn’t budge

His head then went down to sniff this stuff

He licked it then bit it and turned up his nose

Suddenly lifting his head the colt gave a splay-legged jump

And landed, at last, on solid ground

Karen, such a delightful write, I could just visualize every movement and holding my breath that nothing serious happened. This brought back memories of several years ago when my husband was trying his hand at being a gentleman's farmer & when we had a severe icing throughout Virginia & our cattle hadn't drank water in a few days and it was impossible to get to the barn because of the icy conditions. My husband finally thought of taking a hoe and digging his way down to the barn to clear a path for the cattle to get water. My heart ached for him, and as I watched him for hours digging a path to the pond and then watching the frightened cattle trying to walk on the ice. Their legs would spread apart and they would fall to the ground...what an experience. This writing brought back these memories and I'll never forget them.

This must be an incredible sight to witness. This colt has grown into a beautiful horse, Karen. You must be very proud!
I have always had a love for horses, brings me back to another lifetime when I rode like the wind with freedom and abandon.
Much Peace, Love, and Light,
Amber "V"
