Journey from Boys to Men

I have no experience, as I am not male, but I have stood by as my boys struggled to find their footing, and knew that i could not stand in for the part that was missing

How is it that boys learn to be men?

By keenly observing fathers,

Fishing with uncles, and hanging out in grandpa’s shadow

And the fathers of friends, and pastors and coaches

There are policemen and firefighters

And scout leaders and ball players bigger than life

A homerun or touchdown brings them to their feet

Those boys wear their jerseys with cocky pride

And don’t forget those super heroes,

Superman, The Green Hornet ,

And Spiderman too, but before them,

Roy Rogers, King Arthur and Tarzan as well

But alas, many fathers are absent

Or many just plan and simply unworthy

Leaving a boy with no sense of who he is

Or where in this world he has truly come from

And sooner or later the realization hits

Those superheroes, like Santa, are sadly not real

Ball players fall off of their pedestals

Pastors and coaches loose their dignity

So maybe that boy, in order to become a man

Hops a train, joins the army or hitchhikes across Europe

On a quest of their own, but the dragons they slay

Are those within the souls as the boy becomes a man

Last year I wrote two poems, "My Last Write To Men" and "My Last Write To Women"...in there I tried to adjust that loose nut in today's society with my thoughts. This reminded me of these.

I too spent a good portion raising my boys without that everyday, day to day living without a male, role model, and like you said, sometimes the roll model disappoints or fades...leaving the boy to search his dragon out, in order to overcome and end his disillusionments. Each, man and women, no matter how or of whom they are a reflection of, still need to find that specific beast, within, know its weakness, know its strengths and cunningness...in order to be victorious!
I hope my sons find theirs! They are still feeling them out!
but, The journey is magnificient, as long as they watch were each foot is placed, and where...There are SO MANY paths!
Excellent thoughts and wise thinkings

Excellent finale to a touching portrayal. I DO so love anything that enhances the male/female gender issues as I do not believe that we are supposed to be a unisex mishmash. I'm all for women being women in a man's world and coming into their fullness of potential, but sadly many women compete as if they ARE men instead of in the light of their own femininity. In so doing, they tread down both manhood and womanhood, it seems to me. And that has left men wondering who on earth THEY are, at times, too. Well, that's a little hypothesis of mine, anyway. I've still a few dragons of my own to slay... but having a son called George is an asset! :)) Kate xx

Aw, yes, indeed there are countless ways . . . It is sad to think of the ones who take so long to achieve manhood . . . Speaking of for myself . . .

Your thoughts applaud the male's in a young man's life and admonish the absent [but living] father. All of which I agree, wholeheartedly. A Father in a boy's life is so important to their overall development and well-being. I know from where you speak, and I thank you!

God bless you. Kathy

Karen we had four boys and believe me they went through it all and learned from the best yes their dad and grandfather and their favorite heros, they got a lot from their Scout leaders. I believe as long as they have stable poeple in their lives, it makes them great men. Thank you for sharing.

There is an age, which fortunatly someone understood, when mums need to back off and let the boy prove he's a buck, something that only the paternal father can let him know, then other men, the father is the most important person at that time in his life.
Mums do need to stand on the sideline, as her part is over in the making of the transition from the boy to the man, the lad don't want to be thought of as just "nice, cute, sweetheart"... He wants to be wild in his heart. I could say heaps but someone reads my stuff

Karen, everyone needs a basis in life and if they are not give one, they will struggle in so many avenues in their lives. I've noticed throughout my life, most children who have had parents who are interested in their children & their activities and are a part of their childrens lives almost always turned out to be a great man. This poem should open eyes.

Quite profound, Karen. A loving father truly makes a boy's quest much easier, but a loving mother surely helps as well.

Precious. Absent or unworthy fathers. You hit a nerve. What price will we pay (our society) for all these unfit, absent fathers? A very dear price, I suspect. Again, great write.
