All Grown Up

In the back seat of my pickup truck, my granddaughter sits,

In her booster seat, with games and books to help to pass the time.

She talks non-stop (unless she’s asleep) about….

Sometimes, I have no idea what.

But on this day, she became so animated,

There was no way I could ignore her excitement.

So I turned the radio down and then I turned it off,

And turned my attention to her (not to worry, my eyes were on the road!)

“Grandma, I know what I want to be when I get big!

First I will be a cowgirl, I’ll do rodeos, Yahoo!!

But that doesn’t pay too much, so I have more plans to tell,

I will also be a horse trainer like you, maybe give lessons, too.”

She went on in her excitement, I commented when I could be heard,

“And then I’ll go to college!” she exclaimed all in one breath,

“To be a vet of course! And me and Aunt Teresa will work together.”

And well will all drink coffee, ‘cause I will be grown up.

Grandma, can I please have a sip out of your cup?”

A cute, sweet, laughable poem. She has enticement down pat to get what she wants--sell herself BIG, then ask for what she wants. I thought that was cute how she asked for the coffee after that wonderful presentation of what she wanted to be when she grew up.

I love how you've captured a child's exuberance - what wonderful role models children are!

I think it is wonderful Karen that they reach he age where they actually take notice of what we do and find it interesting enough to want to follow in our footsteps. great write as I am going through this stage with two of my grandchildren who want to play music instruments because Nanny do. HAHA, yes, kids between 4 & 6 talk talk talk incessantly, but that's how they learn, and if you listen, i found oftentimes it's in story form, and is great inspiration of any writer, and is magical fun to join in with their babble. I'd get my son to blow at the red traffic light, so that it would turn green. He loved red traffic lights after that. As this shows they are bright and intelligent. The people I found I love most in my life are those who took my banter seriously, as if i were an adult.. Love this, I can feel the warmth, and youngen will remember this day...

It is always heartwarming to see first our children and then if we are truly lucky, our grandchildren love us enough to even for a brief while want to emulate us. I know this feeling and I know the amount of love that would have flowed from the drivers seat to the rear seat. Heart warming write indeed Karen, I loved it.

Brings to mind an aunt I used to have who used to let me drink coffee, knowing Orean would not like it . . . Such an innocence comes from the mouth of babes . . . (They are almost done working out the fine print for my book signing in Taylor . . . Actually, they have decided that if I was to hold a signing there, they want me to hold it outside the city limits . . . We're still negotiating.)
