Broken Child

A new girl, Jade, just arrived today,

So little-girl-like at the age of fourteen,

With bouncy curly ponytails,

One in each side of her head.

If you had been there in our school today,

You’d have observed a frightening sight.

This little girl so out of control,

Threw her bag, cussed loudly, threw a shoe at the wall,

Then swore and screamed some more.

The officer came and told her to stop,

But her angst just continued to grow.

Kicking and screaming, she was hauled down the hall,

Until, in the end, she sobbed in a heap,

In the middle of an oversized chair.

And I want to know, though I see it too often,

As I fight back some tears of my own,

How does a child become so very broken,

What has happened to shatter her soul?

I have seen this happen to a child also. I think its their way of releasing hurt, anger ,fear and frustration. Sadly its a part of some children's lives and they desperately need help counseling , medication . Some times they need to be removed from the home situation also....M

I agree that this is a telling demonstration from a young teenage girl. She must be in a great deal of pain from a significant trial in her life. I hope it is something that can be resolved without her being hurt even more.

A thought provoking write. Sometimes a child has good parents and a situation comes along that just causes an otherwise good child to act out. Some children have emotional and mental problems that render them unable to handle stresses in their lives.

Good question, Karen. What has happened to shatter her soul? I wonder - do we really want to know?
Be blessed for all you do for those kids. I admire you for it!

You've asked a powerful question and sometimes there are answers and sometimes there are none. Hopefully, one day that child will be able to answer that question for herself, gather strength from it, and make a life for herself.

Karen, "no" one knows what this child may have experienced in her life. One thing is for sure, she needs someone to show her they care and are willing to help her in any situation. Little hearts are broken throughout our lands by those who chose to be abusive to them. "No" one know the sadness in a childs heart. Sad!!!

So sad - where were the parents in this situation? Heartbreaking reality for far too many - the Bible says to 'train a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it' -

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Very sad indeed, I tell you I beleive that a child is 99.9% a product of her parents, there is no excuse, people go around throwing balme on society too easily but if that child has parents or a parent there is no reason for her to be so broken and it only goes to confirm that she has/had no good support system.

Ah, much has happened I am afraid . . . At that age you fear for her, because harmones and her past will follow her annd continue getting her into difficult situatiion . . . Screaming for attention is her claim . . . Throwing her bag is her blame . . .

Karen this one wretches the very heart out of me, after raising one daughter of my own, two step daughters and now getting to enjoy three granddaughters and a grandson I can not imagine how anyone can treat a child so badly as to turn them into this.

Karen,

How hard can a simple "I Love You" be. People tend to miss most what is important in life. That fleeting compliment,"You look so pretty this morning," or that special hug, for no reason but just because. I heard a parent say to their child, "Hey dummy, will you move." I was but inches from saying something but decided against it for the sake of all involved. Verbal abuse can be so nonchalant but have a lasting effect on a child. Actually on anyone for that matter. I don't think the parent actually meant it but you know the old saying about thinking before speaking. Peace, Love and God's Special Blessings Always, Paul.

I really believe it is lack of parental control or discipline that's contributed to this little girl-woman's demise; so many parents are too busy with their own lives to even think of watching their children (plus the Child Protective Service has gotten way too involved in non-abusive cases, telling people they can't discipline their children). You can no longer spank your child or yell at them; time outs or talking to your children as though they are your friends seems to be the in thing today. Sad!!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :(

I was spanked as a child, and I think I turned out okay...

Karen, this is so sad, and I've seen it too in my teaching. I often wonder where values, morals are...and the stability of a family, whether parents are together or not. All we can do is love them, and try to offer understanding...and to be there.

So sad Karen! I can understand your question, I feel the same way when I see some of the things children do for attention. I think it all goes to there being no parents at home,or if there are there is no relationships and dicipline, and love, all necessary to nurture a child.Excellent poem!
