Days Passed By

Turning, she walked into the ‘misses’ section,

And ran her fingers longingly along the hem,

Of a soft and flowing above-the-knee skirt,

Paired with a blouse of gauze.

And she remembered days gone by,

When she could have worn that skirt.

Days when she could have twirled in the sun,

Flirting with the world and a tenderhearted boy.

But those years passed her by,

Days of turmoil stole them away,

And when her life was returned to her,

Those precious moments had passed.

Letting go is always difficult, isn't it? I still say let's make hay while the sun's still shinin'!

This is so achingly beautiful as it says so much with so few words. It is sad that all too often whether it is through any fault of our own or not we have a tenedency to look back with regret. Hopefully the future holds a promise of things better...

Your lovely poem makes me think of fashions and how they change. In my aging years I've seen some drastic changes and sometimes I've seen a return of things that were fashionable many years back.

Your poem shows how visual "things" can spark our memories to cause us to return to a past time.

Sad as the writing is, there is a flicker of hope there. Because if the body can't wear those clothes without the ridicule it will attract...the soul will wear it forever, no matter how many years go by, the image on her head will be there, flirting with the world and remembering the words in awe of that tenderhearted boy.

Hi Karen,

Sad, so sad. Days that have passed by are times beyond our grasp, and it hurts to remember. A very well written poem!

Karen, sometimes...most times...you write from your soul...and your words touch me so deeply. You've once again moved me to tears.
