Never Meant for Motherhood

She was never meant for motherhood,

Not every woman is.

She knew this from an early age,

But her mother said she’d be fine when they were hers,

Society in those days, dictated the same.

When the children came, one by one,

Her feelings didn’t change.

The babies looked like little aliens,

Their crying made her cringe.

She made it through; they grew and became human,

She did her duty, fed them clothed them,

And eventually enjoyed teaching them skills,

And watching them learn and succeed.

But there were holes in their souls,

They floundered once grown,

For their love was never nurtured,

And the mother knows, in her heart of hearts,

She was never meant for motherhood.

Truth that cuts to the heart of the matter. Those holes in souls have such a lasting influence on our hearts and lives.

Karen, you are so right!A vry excellent message poem I had a friend that never found the way to become a mother to her 3 children, and they all suffered for the lack of love. I believe that mothers who want to have babies give their love in such a way it will bond with their babies from their birth and nurture them in a way that forms a strong sense of being that lasts their whole lives. It's sad fact some are not meant to be mothrs, and the pressure of society, should not force them to into it.

Love,
Eileen

it is a sad fact. Tragic, yet not incomprehensible. Parenting is hard work and often "alien" even if we will it upon ourselves with the whole of our hearts. In such instances, it is perhaps a difficult decision to have to make, but one of integrity, if one is able to withstand the pressures all around to conform to what some believe is natural womanhood instinct. We all know which and what instincts are ours and we go against them to our peril. Heart-searing yet honest writing, Karen. Thank you. xx

Sad and painful, this. Yes, some people are never meant for such responsibilities.

Very sad but true. In times like this with both parents working, so often children are left to fend for themselves. Keep up the great writings Karen. May God Bless You.

Quite sad, Karen, and there are sadly many fathers who were never meant for fatherhood, as well.

So sad and cutting - some are never meant to be mothers...or fathers.

It is sad that what you say is so true, girls were often peer or parent preassured into becoming mothers and wifes and ridiculed for wanting anything more. Sad also was the fact the ones who paid the greatest price were often the children of these girls who had no say in the matter.

Karen,
I know exactly what you are talking about. My mother is one of those women. I am still paying the price for having had a mother like that. The good news is I vowed to never let that happen to my children. If you are so inclined read my poem "Mother, Mother". Thank you for sharing a very true but sad reality .
Blessings,
Nicole

THERE ARE NO PERFECT MOTHERS SO....I'M THINKING THIS MOM DID THE BEST SHE COULD AND I'M THINKING HER CHILDREN, DESPITE ACQUIRED FLAWS, EVENTUALLY CAME TO UNDERSTAND. THE PHRASES AND IMAGERY IN THIS WORK ARE DONE WELL. THANKS FOR SHARING AND BLESSINGS.

Seems that there are too many of those in today's society; know one who lives next door. Sad situation this family is in!

Fascinating write... well done. I've read your poem three times and each time I come back asking questions. I think that is a sign of good writing.
