...and then we celebrated my sisters triumph over lukemia-the first is a re-post from when she was so ill, the second is new...

Poem Artwork

She Wants to Wear a Pretty Dress

She wants to wear a pretty dress again,

She wants to plant flowers in the dirt.

She wants to feel the wet of her newborn foals,

As she gently delivers them into this world.

She wants to dance with her true love again,

With grace and energy to spare.

She wants to grow her hair long again,

And be done with the hats, caps and wigs.

She wants to carry herself with the grace,

Of the Paris model she once was,

She wants to hear birds, smell flowers and see sunsets,

She wants all of this and more.

So she will enter into the hell of this treatment,

On the forty-sixth year to the day of her birth,

Ever grateful that research and other’s stories,

Have enabled her to have a chance to live on.

She Wore a Pretty Dress

She wore a pretty dress,

And she danced.

The music rang out into the hills about her farm,

Where her horses ran in excitement,

Upon hearing the notes from the band,

Unfamiliar to them in the quiet of every day life.

She wore a pretty dress,

And she danced.

She was the picture of joy as she greeted her guests,

The doctors, nurses, practitioners and pharmacists,

Those who played a part in her survival,

And who had administered meds and held her hand.

She wore a pretty dress,

And she danced.

She hugged those friends and family,

Who stood by her and pitched in when needed.

And those who were her cheerleaders

As came through the shadow of the valley,

Fighting for and hanging on to life.

She wore a pretty dress,

And she danced.

And all those in attendance celebrated her life,

And theirs as well as they realized themselves,

How very precious this life truly is.

And they danced.

Amazingly written, my friend, and what is more it is a miracle due to her perseverance and desire to conquer this blight on humanity that has evolved into that pretty dress she donned and that dance she did. Happy ending, thanks be to modern medicine and a stout heart.

I love the way you presented this in a before and after mode. How wonderful the second poem is with the glory of being given a second chance at life. God bless your sister, and may she have a long healthy life that remains enriched by her joy of it.

Prettify yourself! It's an understandable urge to make the best of yourself. Even a manly bloke like myself, I'm a little envious of the beautiful clothes women can choose from.

Shirt and tie job, mate!

THANK GOD! This is the most wonderful news and comes as a fabulous triumphal thunderbolt and rainbow after the many poems and tributes you have faithfully written alongside her journey and suffering. I love your dancing refrain, Karen, which carries us all along with it to partake of your celebration and happiness. May strength and grace continue to fill and flood her bones and body daily. And may she not only dance but GALLOP again, free of all pain and care. This is a wonderful tribute to you both. Bless you, Kate xx

Beautiful! This brought a tear of compassion, as I remembered our own fight as my daughter fought Leukemia, not once, but three times. She won the fight, and is now 9 years out of transplant. She was the Luminata speaker at the march in Bellingham this summer. I have a huge file of ever-changing poetry through those tremulous times. Love the comparison between the two poems.

I feel like I have lived through this saga with you from reading your book and learning the love and connection you had with your siblings growing up, to finding out just how sick your sister was, to being by her side and there for her in every way you could and now...being there to celebrate her recovery and hope of the future she thought she might not see. Big hugs to you and your sister both.
