The Only Place That wants Him

I sit on my porch in the dusk-dark evening,

Wanting to forget the reality of my day,

But my thoughts soon wander,

To one of my students, whose story is tragic.

His alcoholic mother doesn't want him except for his SIS check.

Depression envelops him and sends him into the night,

Alone with his I-Pod on a bench in a deserted park.

No one at home even notices he's gone,

From his bed of blankets on the floor of a cold garage.

He exists in the in-between world,

Between those who are profoundly handicapped,
And those who can manage to get by,

Mainly the difference is..he knows it.

So the only place that seems to want him is the streets,

Those there will welcome him and give value to who he is.

The gang leaders use him to steel and run drugs,

They convince him that they are family;

That they will be there for him.

But they run away when the cops show up,

But treat him like a hero when he comes out of lock-up.

"Cause he did it all for their cause,

And hen learns to be a part of it all,

This he can do, it's easier than reading and math.

Karen, this is quite a stirring poem. You make me see through his eyes and oh what a shame that a young life has to be treated in this way. My heart goes out to him. You are an amazing person. I don't know how you get through each day with all of this sad stories that are a reality for your students. May the Universe shine all it's healing energy to these neglected young people.

I commend you not only on writing a most profound poem, but for being the amazing teacher that truly cares about her students.

Much peace, love, and light,
Amber "V"

I love the "carers" in our societies - those whose chosen path in life is to minister to the needs of others. Sadly, procreation doesn't limit itself to those who will naturally care for their offspring and give them their place and worth in the world. I feel for all those whose profession gives them access to such heart-breaking circumstances as this... who then end up with the soul-burden for their suffering and yet needing to exercise wisdom when it comes to intervening. Bless you, Karen. You, as well as your subject here, are a very special person. xx

You capture so well the cold hard facts of life for these children who not only their parents but society fails them. Your heart and your caring for them emanates from this one Karen and have no doubt even a moment of your time with them is felt in their hearts as well.

And many more children will become the menacing men inside the alley's shadows to prey on innocents. Some mother should have been barred to have offspring, because love doesn't come automatically given birth.

A sad tale of thousands out there
running the same old game
of finding purpose in the streets
that embrace them
unlike the love they lack at home
Excellent piece Karen
Love & peace be with you

Between a rock and a hard place: no place for a teen to be. Can't the parents be reported? Heartbreaking, right in the gut poetry, effectively penned. I will say a prayer for this boy tonight. :(

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Tough situation like so many, Karen...there may not have ever been a day when some children were conceived out of love and family planning...last century it was the lack of birth control availability, but there's no excuse for it now as birth control is readily available...The Only Place That Wants Him is a result of hopping into bed with a five-minute desire soon to be over and the sperm result is for life and ends up "Alone with his I-Pod on a bench in a deserted park." Heartfelt poetry...

Love,
Sage

This hits me like a sledgehammer right in the gut, Karen. Although my situation was nothing like his, it paralleled it also. Tragic, as you said, if he is lucky he will live long enough to see that there is more than the streets, but it may take him a long time. I will go to bed thinking of this boy tonight . . .
