The most Beautiful Blue Eyes

‘Pa’ is what she calls her grandpa,

A man with a gray haired pony tail down his back,

And a Harley parked in his garage.

He has known great sorrow, her grandpa;

His wife, his love lost to cancer,

Before that the Viet-Nam war,

Which he just doesn’t ever choose to speak of.

When things were tough,

And her parent’s choices caused her harm,

He was kind, and fun and protective.

And he talked about their eyes.

Both have eyes of blue, he showed her in the mirror

It was the thing that helped her bond to him,

When, at three-years old her world turned upside-down.

Now she is eight and out of the blue,

She said to me, “Grandma,

Pa has the most beautiful blue eyes,

They are the color ‘cerulean’,

One of my favorite colors of crayons.”

And so the readers know, how precious this story is,

He didn’t have to be there in Nam,

And he didn’t have to be there for her,

He was her step-grandpa, and trying to deal with life,

But he saw the need and helped in the fight,

To rescue and provide safety for this child.

I am sure that in those eyes she sees comfort, love and one in whom she can trust. Bless him for being there help her fight and to be her rock in the storm.

A beautiful write, Karen. An interesting note is that their eyes were the same color, even though he was her step-grandpa.

My heart goes out to the child and my hand salutes the man. As a grandfather and a step-grandfather I know it is not always easy to be the kind of role model we would like to be but sounds like he found the formula.

Veterans can only guess what would have taken place had their years not been spent in war and away from home and loved ones. Powerful poem of love.
