I often wonder about this life...

I often wonder about this life,
full of heartaches and tortuous strife.
Pathways are rutted and nothing is straight,
waiting in the wings like flesh-eating bait.

Innocence is lost...as months becomes years,
leaving my soul with anxieties and fears.
We toil to stay ahead of the games,
seek to earn a living...keep an honest name.

Children grow up and leave home,
days are lengthy and I feel left alone.
Grandchildren arrive to brighten my days,
curing an emptiness never to sway.

I look in the mirror to find a stranger's stare,
asking, "Who is this person with wrinkles and grayhair?"
A rocking chair is my handpicked friend,
providing a time to rest and to mend.

Memories remain of days eaten by time,
existence is now a prime thought of my mind.
I live each day as though its my last,
knowing one thing for sure I gave it my best.

A realistic look at life as we grow older. They say wisdom comes with age. Live each day to its fullest, and look forward to each new tomorrow. I'm facing much of what you have written about, but I'm like the little engine that could. I just keep moving on! Enjoyed this poem....M

So well said, Barbara...I enjoy each and every day and I hope, when I find my rocking chair , if I can sit still long enough, that I can say the same.
Love,
Taylor

Great piece, you took my thoughts of late and put them to paper. Loved it.

no regrets! i stopped all that a long time ago. if you die with regrets, you die without full dignity, IMHO (in my humble opinion)
if you gave it your best, then you should look back upon your legacy and say, "I have NO regrets!" Well-written -- Jeff

I often wonder about this life, too, but knowing we 'gave it our best' is truly about the best thing we can do.

A journey through time, a time well spent. Yet, plenty left over for more. Good write.

I like the philosophical nature of your thoughts here, Barbara; and ïf you "gave it your best" then, you have no regrets. Love and peace,

Regis
