I see frightened flinching faces,
shots ring out in succession...
teenagers skedaddle leaving a hush.
Far-off voices of policemen shout.
Sirens scream and cars careen,
adolescents jam-packed in vehicles...
flee the scene from a lifeless youth,
lying beside a new motorcycle.
Rescuers cover his body,
snatched in the blink of an eye...
could have been an inventor, surgeon, president.
Gone, gone, not a second to say goodbye.
Snuffed out quicker than a fly by a swatter,
jerked away from the arms of parents...
lost, lost, emptiness and torment moans,
memories inhabit their minds.
It's not fair, no, not fair...leaving parents forsaken,
as killers go free...
sooner or later another life they'll take in vain,
sentencing another family to suffer and grieve.
Futile acts of killing immature teens,
leaving them to die sprawled in streets
like cattle slaughtered at market.
we must teach the youths of our country...
to desist and steer clear of rebellious scalawags.
Awesome your words captured a picture of
Modern day life for far to many
And crime as always
On the rise I fear for tomorrows future!!
Outstanding poetic thoughts my friend!!

Although all so true these days the importance of life~Yes, as adults we all must soulfully try to keep the youth in check, hopefully by being shining role models ourselves.
I pray for our people and the dearly beloved country we call U S of A!
Insightful, educational, and most heartfelt write Barbara~thank you!
All blessings to you~Gwendolyn
From the first line you effectively paint a sordid picture of one of the many problems with humanity and our society. Seems that the violence has taken on a life of its own.
Love that word 'scallawag'. Known quite a few of those rapscallion types. Blessings ...

A truly horrendous facet of modern day life, for far too many.

Rest assured, though it's little consolation, that this happens everywhere. Some of the killed do speed too much and others drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs. That's the pity of it all. They are life wasted. We can only hope that some form of education will be given to these people. Victor
So heartbreaking Barbara, but you offer such great advice, if only they would listen! We have to keep trying. Too many parents etc throw in the towel, giving up too easily, instead of being more assertive. God help us, this world has become a cauldron of confusion! Great poem!
yes, such a waste-we must keep teaching and doing all we can to teach and educate our youth not only in matters of academics but also in matters of humanity
Such a waste of precious life, gone before they could even taste what life could be. I shall pray for these young people and send out healing energy to their families.
Thank you for sharing, so sad but needed to be said!
