Shakespeare’s Sonnets

When I complete my tenure on this Earth
My final wish will be to pack along your sonnets.
In them the pain and angst of tortured soul of mine.

Oh, William Shakespeare, what price you paid
For verse eternity, what pain you bore!
I know, I’ve been there.

Behind thick foliants how many people gleamed
The anguish of your soul by treason wounded?
You walked the path of suffering and sorrow
Towards the gleaming tower of greatness!

Your golden stylus in eternity emblazoned
The one who was a naught without you.

Although there are centuries between us
I still can hear in the silent night
The martyr’s moans, a soul just like mine.

You are the great Shakespeare, no doubt.
And me, I’m just a tiny droplet in the ocean,
But your sonnets you must have, truly, copied
from my tormented soul.

By whim of destiny depraved of peace and love
My poor heart is weeping year round
Awash in misery…

The withered foliage – another grim reminder
Of my impending fate which reeks of soggy earth
Soon to embrace the one
Who dwelled, not lived in this eternal world
In search of happiness.

Oh, William Shakespeare, so distant, yet so close!
You, of all people, have discovered
Unanswered love’s cruelty and anguish!

I follow behind you in your footsteps
Still, after all this time
The same I carry burden
And wondering if posterity would record
The screams of martyr.

Liana Margiva

(Translated from Russian by Anatol V. Kardiukov)

This is such a moving tribute to Shakespeare and all poets. To follow in their footsteps, I cannot because I don't have their talent. I can only hope to be somewhere in the same universe and bring some light to people.

A beautiful poem Liana and "thank you" to Anatol for the translation. This is a wonderful partnership to bring poetry to the masses.

This is a beautiful dialog of words. It speaks of much pain and anguish. I have started a few like this. Somehow I am moved by the grace of God to put those horrors behind me and think of the good times of past present and what will be my future.
Enjoy life. Even the bad times are good.
God Bless,
Lew

I've known unspeakable cruelty and misery in my lifetime. Yet when I read poetic descriptions of love's cruelty and anguish, I'm often lead to think, "Okay. That was, indeed, a bad trip. Now, move on and get a life." I find it difficult to equate the cruelty of a lost love with the screams of a martyr.

My cultural ignorance limits me. I wish I could study this poem in its original language for I have some misgivings about the disconnected translation of the introductory stanza and the stilted and disconjugated syntax of the last stanza. How to translate such a unique work with unerring accuracy and subtlety of intention from its original language is akin to translating the Holy Scriptures into modern English from the original Hebrew and Greek writings. What do they say in Hollywood about something being "Lost in the translation"? Perhaps if Translator Anatol V. Kardiukov owned modern English as his native tongue... But we'll never know.

"Shakespeare's Sonnets" by Poet/Author Liana Margiva is a masterpiece of woeful sophistry. Even ol' Bill, himself, would be proud!

But maybe I'm just jealous.

"...Bard, so distant, yet so close!...! the poetess climbed the literary steps to brush her lovely elbow with the master, whose sonets where composed perhaps, truly from a tortured soul.
Excellent is the word.
