Powerless in an
empowered world,

Some days, I am a mouse –
struggling to creep unseen
and uneaten through a
rocking-chair room
of long-tailed cats.

Some days, I look at the world
with teeth bared
and claws sharp
fighting to defend
my right to be defensive.
